Teaching research for NCEA L2 and L3 Statistics

Dr Marion Steel’s (Epsom Girls Grammar School) workshop informed teachers about supporting students who are learning to change data analysis into words.

Research is now a required part of the statistics standards both at NCEA level 2 and 3. We are all beginners in teaching students how to research and include findings in reports. Marion shared her experience of running large Statistics courses and what is working in classrooms. She has shared the resources and teaching ideas which EGGS have found helpful.

The background article (Let’s talk about literacy) sets the scene around the gap students need to negotiate between Secondary and Tertiary education, and what teachers can do to bridge this gap. It is essential reading for teachers, and is a useful resource to begin conversations about general literacy and research skills between colleagues in Maths and Stats departments and other subjects.
